I began my studies of First Peoples of Australia in a graduate educational studies diploma program called Aboriginal Studies 42 years ago. I was in my early 30s. It brought home to me not only the complex social structures of societies still more-or-less living a traditional life but also the destruction of so much and the taking of the land and the controls placed over First Australians from the latter 19th century especially - so-called "missions", theft of children, cultural and people demonisation. The principal of "terra nullius" meaning that the raising of a flag by James Cook on Possession Island in 1770 off the north-east of Cape York (and there is some debate about whether he actually did so in any event) automatically made the eastern half of the continent the possession of George III - the theft of land, ethnic-cleansing, massacres, introduction of noxious exotic plant and animal and fish species - dispossession of the original peoples - is echoed right here, Cara, in your outline of what you knew and have learnt in more detail from your informant in Bethlehem.
